4 Wisdom teeth extraction. Pain, Swelling!?!

Question: 4 Wisdom teeth extraction!. Pain, Swelling!!?
Ok, so I'm gonna get all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted this Friday!. It's gonna be a surgical extraction since they're all below the gum still!. I'm dead nervous and terribly afraid of pain, so I'm gonna be asleep when it's done!.

I'm also on the pill, and I've read online that women taking contraceptive are more susceptible to dry sockets (really painful, so I've heard)!

So my questions are, will the swelling be really bad!? Like will my face get all puffed up like a chipmunk!? And are dry sockets really horrible!? And what can I do to prevent or lessen the swelling and pain, should they occur!?

Thanks =))Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had all my wisdom teeth pulled and was still awake for this!. I couldn't be put under because I have asthma and could die while under!. It does hurt, but you will not experience the pain from them taking the teeth out, since you will be asleep!. Lucky! I haven't heard anything about being on the pill and increasing the risk of dry sockets, but you could be right!. I would talk with the doctor beforehand and get their opinion!.

Your cheeks could swell!. My advice it to ice them as much as you can!. It might hurt a little bit to put ice packets on your cheeks, but trust me, it will help!. I iced my cheeks for about 15 min!. after the surgery and then stopped!. My cheeks got really yellow and green bruises on them and swelled a lot!. I've heard from a friend that taking a bra and wrapping it around your head (so the cups are against your cheeks) will help!. This might sound weird, but it worked for her!.

I did get a dry socket and yes they are very very painful!. Not so much the dry socket itself, but what the doctors do to get rid of it!. If you do have a dry socket, the doctor will insert medicated gauze into the infected area and will remove it a few days later!. The medicine on the gauze tastes like chilli pepper and it made me gag and made it hard for me to breath for about a minute!. You will get used to the tatse also!. Removing the gauze is not big deal!. It didn't hurt that bad!. Ways you can prevent getting dry sockets, cause by food getting into the holes, is to wash them out!. Try getting a plastic medicine syringe and shooting water into it!. Your doctor might give you one, but if not, you can pick them up at your local pharmacy for a few dollars!. Also, take your medicine as directed and it does help with the pain a lot!.

Just try to get rest and not sleep on your cheeks!. Also, take it slow with eating and drinking and only eat things without chunks, (ice cream, pudding, jello)!. You should be all better in a few weeks if you do everything you're supposed to do!. Also stay inside as much as you can while your mouth heals because you are more susceptible to infections!.

I hope this helps and that your recovery is smooth and fast! Good luck hun!

oh I also forgot to add a comment about the numbness that might not go away!. Sometimes things go wrong and when the teeth are removed a nerve gets damaged in the process!. My friend got her wisdom teeth removed and they damaged on of her nerves and now she can't feel her bottom lip!. This has been this way for a couple of years!. However, the chances of this happening to you, is slim to none!. So don't freak yourself out about this!. Your mouth will be numb for a while, so, like I said, take it easy!. Watch what you are doing!. I thought I was eating something and I was actually biting my own cheek!. Everything will be just fine!. Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hello!. I am in the process of having my wisdom teeth removed, i'm in Asia and my dental surgeon is removing them one by one for me because I get sick quite alot and he thought that would be a better process for me!. The upper wisdom teeth tend to hurt much less, and from my experience the lower ones are the ones which cause the most pain and problems after extraction!. You are lucky that you are being put to sleep during the procedure because like the lady before I had to make do with a local anesthetic and mines are also below the gums, I was able to feel the prodedure being done and tears were literlarly pouring down my face from the pain, so you wont have to worry about that!.

Basically the pain comes after the removal, i'm not sure about how long you will take to come round if you are going to be asleep but when they give you your anti-biotics and painkillers it's a good idea to begin taking them straight away, because the pain comes fast!. It varys from person to person with the swelling and bruising, so you may find that it's not that bad and if you do get swelling you may find that it goes down quite quickly!.

The thing I would stress to you though is to forget about what you look like after the procedure, it's more important that you stay healthy and take your anti-biotics so that your gums will heal nicely and i'm pretty sure you will be feeling a bit yuccky for a few days, so just rest and give yourself some time to heal!. I found that eating really cold or really warm things hurt quite a bit, so if you are eating soup try and not make it too warm!. My dentist told me that instead of placing ice on your cheeks to reduce swelling that it's actually better to soak a flannel in hot water and place it on your cheeks!.

Don't worry yourself about anything, I promise it isnt as bad as some people make out!. Just pay attention to all the aftercare intructions your dental surgeon gives you and follow them closely!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I guess your doctor will perform the surgery under local anesthesia as it is sufficient for your all 4 third molars disimpaction and hence general anesthesia is not required!. If anesthesia administered properly, you will not experience pain, only thing you might just feel is the pressure of surgical instruments during the surgery!. Degree of swelling depends upon how atraumatic surgery has been performed but some amount of swelling is unavoidable!. You can apply ice packs over the swelling areas and make sure that you dont disturb the surgical site for atleast 8-10 days otherwise you might experience dry socket which is very painful indeed!. Numbness in your lips, tongue and adjacent areas is common which will wear off in 2-3 days!. Only in few cases, the numbness persists for few months!. And yes, please follow the post-operative instructions by your doctor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
