Why is clove oil a temporary cure for toothache I have recently lost a filling in my back tooth and my friends
mum suggested I use clove oil until I can get to my dentist and much to my surprise it worked but I do not know why !

it's got a compound in it called "eugenol "which acts as an analgesic/pain killer.
It's the same chemical used to make street drug X,,exstasy.

Clove Oil is Very Toxic to humans,,and in not too high a concentration.
Dont swallow the spit,,,even that will at least gooch-up your stomach
But it certainly IS a "miracle drug" for toothache releif.
Another one,,probably 85% as effective and Non-Toxic is "Red Pepper" ,,,Cayenne Pepper.
Tobasco sauce on a small piece of cotton stops toothache almost instantly.
Any sort of red pepper sauce works.
Or even a pinch of ground red pepper,,packed next to tooth.
Neither are "HOT" as long as ya dont get it on your directly tongue.
The pepper's active ingredient is Capsacin.
Hot Red Peppers are loaded with it.
Several "old fashioned" commercial toothache remedies are capsacin-based.
Plain aspirin left to dissolve on the tooth works,,,but it's a bit slow.
And it's acidic and which is bad on tooth enamel.
The Taste and Feel of the dissolving tablet are terrible.
If you can take Aspirin,,,2 or 3 tablets will help keep you from waking up in middle of night with tooth throbbing again.
It's a "powerful" drug,,for as common & "old school" as it is.
It's effect lasts a surprisingly long time.
One caution is,,if you expect to have the tooth pulled,,,
aspirin makes the bleeding worse.
