Does a tooth extraction require a spacer to keep teeth from shifting in a 6 year!

Question: My dentist didn't recommend a spacer to keep my 6 year old's molar from shifting, which is going to be extracted due to her pupotomy not working. I'd like to avoid braces, especially since I didn't need braces as a kid. It's an upper molar, 4th from midline I believe. Should I push for a spacer?

It depends...
1) Is her 6-yr molar fully erupted? If her primary 1st molar was extracted (4th from the line), then studies have shown that not much space loss can occur.
2) If her 6-yr molar is still erupting or has not erupted, it can push the 2nd primary molar (5th from the line) toward the center and cause crowding while it is erupting. In this case, she will need a spacer to prevent the space loss, which will crowd out the space that is designated for her bicuspids.
My recommendations: ask your daughter's dentist about getting a spacer. See what he/she says. Perhaps the dentist forgot to mention it.
Another note: Just because you didn't have braces does not mean your daughter will not need them also. Remember, it's genetics...she is getting 1/2 your genes and 1/2 her father's. She may end up getting your small mouth and dad's big teeth. The two mixed together may mean a future of orthodontics. Hope that helps! Kids's teeth are a lot more important than most people think they are! I'm glad that your are concerned! Good luck!

No.

All kids lose their baby teeth at some point, right? These are baby teeth; they will all fall out anyway. Having the tooth extracted doesn't mean the adult teeth will grow in crooked---- that is all up to the baby's DNA to decide.

My assumption would be to say yes.
