Which type of filling do dentists generally use?!

Question: I was never given a choice, so therefore, I was never aware that there existed options for fillings, then I read on here about silver and plastic types.

If your cavity is on a posterior tooth, the choice is often an amalgam (silver) filling because the composite (white) ones aren't as strong and in the molar area there are very strong forces of mastication. Also, you don't have to worry as much about appearance in the back of the mouth. In the front of the mouth, the choice is usually a composite filling because those teeth aren't really under as much pressure and composites look much better since they can be matched to the shade of your teeth. Also... a helpful hint: if you ever thought of whitening your teeth, you want to do it before getting a composite, since the whitener won't change the shade of the filling, only the shade of your tooth.
