Painkillers/ Dentists?!
Question: Is it okay to take a painkiller a couple of hours before going to the dentist if you're getting a filling? I know they numb your mouth but could it help at all? Maybe it would interfere with the pain relievers they give you? Any ideas?

I am a dentist. You should take ibuprofen as soon as you end your appointment with your dentist. That gives the drug enough time to kick in before your numbness wears off. If you a healthy individual with no stomach/intestinal problems, then you can take up to 800mg ibuprofen at a time 3x a day (every 8 hours). For routine dental fillings this would be overkill and maybe 2 200mg pills at the end of your appointment.
You need to be careful about what you are taking. I would avoid aspirin and ibuprofen, because these are blood thinners- if you start to bleed at the dentist's office, it can take longer for the bleeding to stop. You could try taking tylenol, but it's never worked for pain for me.
I would leave it alone just incase the dentist needs to give you anything. if your in pain afterwards then you can take painkillers. Filling dont hurt but the numbness wearing off can be uncomfortable!
