What did people use to brush/clean their teeth before the toothbrush was invente!

Question: They actually used wooden sticks (chew sticks or siwaks) by chewing on both ends, fraying one end and rubbing that against their teeth. This is actually dated back to as early as 3500 B.C.

Early bristle brushes were made of stiff, hog's hair attached to handles made of bone or bamboo. After these were decided to be too rough on teeth and gums, the hair in the brushes was changed to horse hair.

By the 17th Century, people were using rags or sponges dipped in sulfur oil or salt to rub their teeth clean.

And so on....we've come a long way!
