Question involving wisdom teeth?!

Question: well, i have to get my wisdom teeth out shortly. what can i expect from this? how does it feel afterwards? how long is the recovery time? i also heard that you can only eat yogurt for the first couple weeks afterwards. is this true? i've never had surgery of any kind before, so i am very nervous about what to expect. any information/advice would be appreciated. :)

i just had my wisdom teeth pulled on feb 26th so i know all about it. it depends on how bad they are impacted (mine were impacted in my sinuses). are you being put to sleep or just local anesthetic? i was put to sleep. (thank God). the first day I don't really remember much at all...I was really swollen and numb. I suggest getting sprite to drink for after because it will help with any nausea you might have. my boyfriend had to feed me a milkshake (which tasted sooooo good) and it would dribble down my chin, but i wouldn't feel it. the next few days are horrid. make sure you take control of your pain. i was prescibed vicodin...you should definitely take it every 4 hours because if you wait too long the pain will be so intense. don't drink out of a straw either. it may be easier, but it can clots to unclot and you'll start bleeding. don't swish with water either when you brush your teeth....lean your head back and forth....and don't spit just let gravity take its course when you lean over the sink. hmm what else....you are pretty much on a liquid diet. usually you can't chew because your jaw hurts so bad. eat soup and i was able to eat eggs after a couple of days. it does not take a couple of weeks to start eating....i started eating normally like 5-6 days later. oh and make sure to help with the pain and to clean out the incisions (so you don't get an infected) swish your mouth (the leaning head thingie and not spitting) with salt water. especially after you eat or have soup. the most pain i was having was being able to open my jaw though and thats because the oral surgeon said i had an extremely small mouth so they had to put metal clamps and bricks inside my mouth so he could get in there. i'm all healed up now and its only been a little over 2 weeks. i hope this helps...anymore questions feel free to ask

There will be bleeding and swelling that you should have for a few days. You can only eat soft foods for a few days, but definitely not a week. You should be good to go a week after the surgery as long as there is no infections and proper healing of the gums.

Many have either 2 or 4 wisdom teeth. If you take out 2 at a time it wont be so bad, if you take out all 4 it may be annoying for a while with the swelling and some bleeding for a few days.

If it your bottom teeth, make sure you get a syringe from the dentist that shoots out water to keep the sockets cleaned out. You should eat soft foods for a few days, but if you gargle with salt water, they will heal faster and you will be able to eat real food sooner. Mashed potatoes and gravy are a good starter food!

Liquids and soft, cool foods for several days. No sucking through a straw. Follow Oral Surgeons directions very carefully. You will have pain medication, but shouldn't need it for too many days. Have someone with you...you'll need some help the first few days. Good luck and God bless! kjl

The recovery will be different for everyone. Follow your doctors instructions exactly to prevent dry sockets or other side effects. There is no reason you can only eat yogurt for weeks. You will probably want to stick to soft foods for a few days, but you will be fine within a week or so. Make sure not to drink from a straw or any other sucking with your mouth because it can pull out the stitches.

I didn't feel a thing, I was so numb it took like a good hour after I got my tooth pulled before I felt the pain(its not so bad) or my tongue. It will take a couple of weeks or so before that hole closes and my doctor told me I could pretty much eat anything I wanted but try to eat soft foods to be on the safe said and you can't drink Through a straw for a while. If you're a smoker you may want to stop for a week or so I'm a smoker and I got a dry socket(that's when you let too much air in your mouth and it gets in the hole your tooth was in) that hurt like hell. As long as you don't get that dry socket you'll be fine. Good Luck.

The only thing that I might add is to second the syringe statement, and to reccomend smoothies for post surgery food. Several times after I got mine done I got small bits of food stuck in the holes, which hurt alot. This happened for awhile, cause it took some time for the holes to close up. The oral surgeon can give you a syringe that you fill with water and spray in there to clean them out.

I also would not have survived it if I hadn't started having smoothies. Try to avoid friuts with seeds (like strawberries or raspberries), but the nice thing about the smoothies is that if you get the all friut ones made with things like mangoes, apples, bannanas, etc and then get it made with protien powder they will be healthy and pretty filling. I found that the pudding and mashed potates didn't stick with me for very long.
