If the tooth tested devital then that means the nerve has died and eventually the dead nerve tissue will start to rot and that will cause an abscess. The only way to take care of the dead nerve is to remove it by doing a root canal. Once a tooth has had a root canal it is much more fragile because the tooth has been hollowed out. The tooth is at risk to splitting and if this happens the tooth cannot be saved. A filling will not protect the tooth which is why a crown is needed.

its no big deal at all, people overrate the nightmare of it. just get it taken care of before you feel pain. the root canal is to take the nerves out so when the crown is put on you wont feel pain from the dead tooth underneath. which will eventually happen. And dead teeth can start to change color like gray or even light black. just listen to the dude he looks at teeth all day.

I had the same thing, but im 13.
Not that big of a deal, it didnt hurt or anything just took a long time to do it.
lots of needles and freezing mouth.
