Question: My husband had a root canel started yesterday (Friday) and has an abscess on his gum above the tooth I feel so bad the guy is in so much pain he says it is running from the tooth back the jaw and into the ear. He is taking tylonol but it does not seem to be working and have ambosol but it only seems to help for an hour or so, any other suggestions? (he is on high blood pressure meds as well)

Antibiotics usually start working in 24 to 36 hours, however when the infection is in a tooth or jaw (bone) it takes longer merely because the blood supply isn't as good in that kind of tissue. Warm compresses help to increase the blood flow to the area and carry the meds to the area. The part that bothers me is, you said they started the root canal before treating the abscess. That can be very dangerous, usually they want to treat the infection first with strong antibiotics for several days before drilling. The reason is the infection can worsen. If it is the upper jaw the root of the tooth goes very deep into the jaw bone and there isn't much distance between the end of the tooth and the brain. The risk is greater once it is drilled on. If it doesn't get better by tomorrow morning I would go to the ER and get an injection of antibiotics. That is the quickest way (other than an IV) to get the meds to kick in. It would be good for him to be taking Motrin to decrease the inflammatory response.

About 24 hrs. If he does not have an antibiotic, he needs one. If he isn't feeling better, he needs to call his dentist.

Ibuprophen would be likely to decrease inflammation & help relieve pain. Antibiotics usually take a few days to kick & should be totally completed no matter how good he feels before he is finished with them. He may feel worse before he feels better, b/c after the antibiotics kill millions of bacterial cells, they break open & release their toxins which can make him feel worse, but this shouldn't last long & he should still continue taking the antibiotics
RN

use clove oil it works the best just put some on a q tip and then put it on the tooth

Call the dentist he should give him something for pain at least enough to last until the antibiotics start to work .the anbesol is a good temporary fix put it is a topical medicine so its only good until the saliva in your mouth washes it away .antibiotics usually take up to 48 hours to start to help toothache pain .HOPE HE FEELS BETTER SOON !!!!
