I had one last week, and its not all that bad. First of all, the third from the front is one of the easy ones -- Only 2 roots I think vs. 4 or more for a back molar. Second, the dentist should give you adequate pain medicine so that there is no pain at all. If you can feel a bit of something, tell your dentist, who will shoot you up witha bit more novacaine. Third, my dentist has movies that you can watch through VR glasses -- it's the only way to go! Fourth, this should only last about 1.5 hours.

It'll be fine. Don't worry.

I've had about 5 root canals. And usually they split them up into a couple visits. Make sure you are completely numb. You don't wanna feel the dentist filing away at one of those roots. But as long as your VERY numb you'll be fine. Just be sure to get some pain medication in your system as soon as your done. And it will probably be a good idea to take a nap afterwards.

are you being sedated

ive had it
its a breeze
i was soooooooo worried before but after it was fine
but make sure you take a family member with you

My dad has had several root canals, and he said the pain is minimal if the dentist knows what he is doing. He said the time it takes depends on how many roots your tooth has, apparently some have 3, some have 2. It also depends on the extent of damage to the tooth. I hope yours is fast and painless.

I think it's faster than 3 hours. I have never had a root canal but I have had a few oral surgeries and extractions. Don't worry, they do them every day...and lots of people get them. I'm sure you'll be fine! My friend had one back in high school, and she had chipmunk cheeks for a day or 2, but the swelling goes down pretty fast. I remember her saying that she didn't remember anything from the actual procedure cuz you are out, but they told her she was saying funny things from the gas! (Cursing and giggling) =) They gave her great pain killers, and prescriptions too. Good luck, I hope it is not too bad. I love the dentist!

I've had 2 and except for the procedure taking so long. (mine was over an hour both times) It's really not so bad. Just a little discomfort afterwords but they will give you something for that. Don't worry at all.

There shouldn't be any pain. They numb it and give you stuff for pain. It is long ... about 3 hours can go a bit longer. You lay there with your mouth open forever. Most of the time you are just sitting waiting ... first to get numb, then they do work.
They have to make a mold of your teeth. And then put a temp on. Unless they make theirs there.???
Good luck. Relax.
It isn't that big of deal.
Ask for something for your nerves.

It isn't a big deal!!! Take my word for it...and I am a cry baby! It's no more than having a tooth filled...they are just going the clean the infection that is by the root of your tooth. The whole thing is numb.. you feel nothing...it usually takes an hour or less.I've had several of them and the worst thing about a root canal is usually the tooth ache before you go to the dentist is about an 11 on a scale of 1-10...so just to have the tooth ache go away is blissful!! ? don't spend another minute scaring yourself...it's no big deal!!

my feelings are too many dentists are gun happy to get root canals done so they can get that new car...
its sad when a root canal costs more than a television, and unfortunately lots of people cant afford the dentist because of the expenses,
i have had one done and in answer to your question the only thing that kinda hurt was the injection to numb me, then nothing i think most discomfort is just from keeping your mouth open for so long but my money hungry dentist put this rubber thing in my mouth so i could relax my jaw just a bit.
i really dont trusts dentist, and i havent heard the word root canal so much as i have in the past few years...
always get a second opinion too..
crazy.. and good luck with your root canal you will be fine :)

Don`t worry your dentist will or should numb you up well. If you`re really stressing out, have ur dentist precribe a calming agent like valium. Those work great and is very inpensive.

If you are going to an Endodontist (root canal specialist), the procedure should be quick. Each person responds differently to pain, but if you are having some pre existing anxiety, it would benefit you to request Nitrous Oxide sedation. This is an extremely safe gas used to relax the patient and make your overall experience comfortable. Good Luck! I hope you will find this link helpful!
