Braces, switching orthodontist?!

Question: I'm planning to stay in a foreign country for about a year which gives me no chance to get my braces tightend, checked up by my current orthodontist. However, I do not want to spend whole year without getting my braces checked up on a regular basis, neither.

So my question is If I find an orthodontist in a country that I'm planning to stay in, would I be able to go on with this procedure? or do I have to stick with one orthodontist only.

A clear cut answer without any deep unuseful details..........

checking ur braces by the same dentist and regularly is the best for the best results..........
but that don't means life will ends if that dentist disappeared..........
but the best way to have switching ur orthodontist, is to ask the current one to give u a report writing in it ur history with the treatment plan he was started with... and some details that he thinks will help the second orthodontist to follow up ur braces and getting the best for u..

that is the ideal and that is we do in our country.......

But if ur orthodontist refused that... life will not stop and to have ur braces checked by another one is better than not to be checked at all

ask your orthodontist

The reason your orthodontist says "no" is that every office, not just different countries, practice different techniques, have different materials, even use different gauge brackets.

I had a case walk in the office a few weeks back that started orthodontic treatment in Iran. The orthodontist was so proud that and had assured the patient that he was using American techniques and had even provided a letter that he is a member of the American Association of Orthodontics. When we examined the patient, the brackets were placed incorrectly and they were .018 x .025 gauge archwire slot, when we use .022 x .028 slot.

I know some offices do use the lower gauge bracket, but I am unaware of which ones do. Besides that, the patient hadn't been seen in 6 months and teeth had moved in the wrong direction. All we could do was make her comfortable with what she had till she decides if she wants to start over.

This may sound technical, but it meant that we couldn't treat the patient without starting over. Also, all the initial records were in Iran and we can't work without taking some of them over.

In other words, if you are going to another country, you may need to be prepared to start over.

lots of patients switch orthodontist mid treatment. i did. however, switching to a different orthodontist in a different country can be risky. i dont know of anyone that has done that and i am not familiar with the dental practices of other countries. the best advice i can give u is to ask around when u get there and find the most reputable orthodontist around. go see him. he should be honest with you. if he cant help u, just keep your braces clean and know that you will be wasting alot of time in brackets that you will have to make up for when you get back. good luck

Dentists in different countries are trained differently. Depending on what country you're going to, they could be "good for nothing". Many dentists have different treatment plans for the same ortho case. If you ask one orthodontist what they would do to a certain patient, it might be different than what another one would do. Neither are necessarily wrong. Changing your orthodontist can prolong the time you have braces because you may be, in essence, "starting over" with someone else's treatment plan.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do! : )
