Question:
I recently had a root canal and my dentist said I need to wait a month before they put on a temporary crown?
What is the point in waiting a month for a temporary crown?
Answers:
Your dentist wants to make sure that the root canal worked before putting in a post, core and temporary crown.
If a temporary crown is put on right after the root canal and the tooth starts hurting again, the dentist would have to drill off the core buildup and back out the post to clean out the root canals again, which may further erode your remaining tooth structure.
It is standard procedure to wait a few weeks after a root canal to make sure it worked before putting a post + core + crown on it.
As a matter of fact, doing a post + core + crown prep + temp right after an RCT is considered cutting corners and not in the patient's best interest.
Hope this helps.
