Root canal procedure spanning over multiple visits?!
Question:
Root canal procedure spanning over multiple visits?
I had a root canal on Friday. My dentist explained that before my appointment that it's a two, perhaps three, visit procedure. One visit for the actual root canal, and then another visit or two for the crown....
I went in on Friday, was in the chair for about 1.5 hours and then he explained that the root canal was 90% of the way complete, put in a temporary filling and asked me to make an appointment to come back in to complete the root canal, filling and "build-up"(?)....I then had to make another appointment for the crown prodedure. My next appointment is about .5 weeks out. I've never heard of a root canal spanning over multiple days. Is this common practice?
Answers:
Yes it is.
General dentists very frequently do the root canal over 2 visits. Endodontists frequently do them in one, but sometimes 2 as well.
And this is in fact very common in the USA. Root canals done elsewhere in the world in one visit are frequently done poorly or incompletely. So it may take 2 visits, but at least they are done correctly.
