When you floss if your gums bleed does it mean you have problem or you cut a ne!

Question:

When you floss if your gums bleed does it mean you have problem or you cut a nerve?

Answers:

Bleeding when flossing is a sign that there is a problem. Usually swollen or puffy gums with bleeding during flossing is an indication of mild to moderate gingivitis, if it's just developed. Most people do not bleed when flossing unless they pop the floss and cause trauma to the tissue. See your dentist for a through cleaning and exam to determine treatment for your condition before it progresses into perio disease, which is a much more serious condition that can lead to infection, bone loss, surgery and eventual loss of teeth. Hope I've been of some help, see your dentist soon.

The only way to treat gingivitis is with a professional cleaning to remove the hard calculus and tartar below the gum line that you can't reach or remove. This is what causes the tissue to bleed, floss won't and cant' remove it. Having them professionally cleaned and "keeping them that way" with excellent flossing and brushing at home, is the only way to treat gingivitis.
