its gonna take like a day to fully clot. change the gauze every few hours. since the novacaine is obviously wearing off.... your gonna feel pressure... like a deep throbbing. its gonna hurt for a few days.your gonna feel pain in your jaw and the sides of your neck. u dont normally get sick from it, but try not to swallow it. i'm surprised your doc didnt give you pain killers like tylenol3 with coedine. that stuff is serious. but if you can, go to the pharmacist and ask them for a mouthwash that u can use for tooth extractions. i forget what its called but it comes in a white bottle with skyblue on it. it kills the germs that form esp when u have dental surgery and keeps your breath from gettin stinky. you can drink but not from a straw. n no spitting. the suction action can caue the blot clot to come out from the hole where the tooth came from. eat soft stuff. nothing hot. hurts bad.

I had two wisdom teeth removed about 2 months ago. Your dentist should have provided you with all of these details before you left. If they didn't, I'd consider them negligent.

To answer the question, it'll take several hours for the bleeding to mostly stop, if it's still bleeding the next day call the dentist. You should have gauze in your mouth and change it a few times an hour for the first 4 or so hours. You should also have an ice pack on the area for the first few hours.

Don't drink through a straw for a few days. The suction can cause the clot to come out (very bad) and cause dry socket. It's quite painful from what I hear.

My dentist offered a prescription pain medication and recommended Motrin as an alternative. I went for the Motrin, but mine didn't hurt too bad so I didn't take anything.

You can drink water (out of a glass to avoid any suction) swallow carefully, gelatin or thin soups or broth for a day or two. Nothing sticky nor anything that requires chewing.
