I'm a dentist.
HellenDDS is correct in that Amoxicillin kills a wider variety of bacteria than does Penicillin. Specifically, it kills bacteria commonly found in the sinuses but not typically found in the mouth.
Additionally, Amoxicillin has a longer half-life than PenVK, and thus can be taken every eight hours, whereas PenVK must be taken every six.
She is incorrect, however, in her statement that 300mg of Penicillin is an indadequate dose. We typically prescribe 500mg because we know it is, with little exception, an adequate dose. Depending on your weight, however, 300mg may be adequate...although in all honesty, I always prescribe 500mg for adults.
Both medications are entirely appropriate for dental infections that are aerobic in nature.
Amoxicillin is a little broader spectrum (kills more bugs). The PenVK is too low of a dose to effectively treat dental infections. No problems switching from Pen to Amox
The Amox Is Stronger.
