Can fluoride cause a sore throat?!

Question: Ive been to two doctors in the past 4 months for throat pain and trouble. They all found nothing in their tests. At first i thought i had vocal nodules. Now as im looking into my habits im wondering if its possible for fluoride to cause the sore throat. Ive been using it often on my braces and since you cant rinse for 30 minutes im undoubtidly swallowing some. Any thoughts?

hey,
I really had to think on your question.
I have never had a patient complain of a sore throat from fluoride but that does not mean it can not happen.
After you use the fluoride and you are waiting for the 30 minutes to be up, are you swallowing your saliva or spitting it out so that you do not swallow the remnants of the fluoride in your mouth? If you are spitting all of your saliva out for the whole 30 minutes after your flouride rinse, then yes, you could have a sore throat from it being dry for that time. Sometimes patients who bleach will spit the whole time they have bleaching trays in and their throats can get dry and sore. Also, sinus drainage can make your throat hurt terribly bad. If you are swallowing your saliva and you are positive that you are spitting out all of the fluoride after rinsing, then I would call the orthodontist and ask if you could either use it less or try a different brand to rule it out. Just some thoughts on your mystery, not set in stone. Google the brand of fluoride you are using and see if a side effect could be a sore throat and then you wioll feel better about it. good luck to you!

Flouride would just give you an upset stomach not a sore throat. DOnt put so much in your mouth when you rinse and you wont swallow any
