Wisdom teeth or no retainer..?!

Question:

Wisdom teeth or no retainer..?

i use to have braces 6 yrs ago and my teeth straightened, but i didn't use my retainer.. lol. but now my wisdom teeth have been slowly erupting over the past 2 yrs and since then i've noticed my teeth are going back to the way they were before. can this be because of my wisdom teeth or not using the retainer?! please enlighten me.. lol

Answers:

It's most likely because you weren't using your retainer.

The thing with teeth is that the collagen fibers in the ligaments that anchor your teeth to your jawbone has some "bounce" to it, and they will tend to return your teeth to their previous position, which is why you need retainers after orthodontic work to prevent that.

Also, your jawbone is constantly remodeling, changing shape in response to the mechanical forces placed on them when you chew. This will also tend to shift teeth gradually over time and another reason why retainers need to be worn.

Retainers are for protecting the amount of money, time and effort you invested in straightening your teeth.

You will need to spend more money on more orthodontics to re-straighten your teeth. Hopefully you will protect your investment better this time by using your retainers properly.
