Finished Antibiotics, but there is still swelling? Do I ask for more?!

Question: Ive been on Clindamycin (yes, im allergic to penacillin) for 6 days now, and I have one days worth of pills left (taking 4 per day). After three and a half days the swelling finally started to go down a bit, and the pain dramatically lessened. There is still however a fair amount of swelling both inside my mouth, and on my jaw in the area of the infected tooth. Should there still be swelling after I finish the antibiotics, do I need to call my dentist and ask for another round? Or will the swelling keep going down even though ive stopped taking the antibioitics?

I would call your dentist and discuss this as you do not want the infection to remain, or get stronger. Not taking enough antibiotics to totally kill off the bacteria will enable the germs to get strong, mutate and be resistant to other treatment. I would talk to the dentist asap to avoid delaying the antibiotic.

If there is still swelling I would call the dentist. he/she may want to re exam the tooth or they may want to either give you more of the same meds or maybe change what you are taking. A lot of the meds are specific for one thing but don't work well on others. The swelling should be gone if it isn't and you quit it may just take hold again and be worse that it was to Begin with
