First off, braces cost more than that.
Second, depending on what needs to be done with the teeth/jaw the amount goes up in price. For example if she has to have a fruenectomy (the little piece of skin between the top lip and gums) go way down they have to have that removed. How long she has to wear them might play a part and then the cost of a retainer and if she looses it. It could cost a pretty good chunk of change.

You are both off. Depending how much Orthodontia you need and where you happen to live (NYC is very costly) the amt. ranges from $2500-$3000.
There are many insurance companies that pick up the first $1000.00---

Cost varies depending on where you live and how much work your teeth need, but, I do know they cost more than $500.
My children just got their braces off -- one was $2800, the other $3500 -- but, the insurance paid for most of it. So, I guess if your friend was thinking about how much it would cost someone out of pocket (cost of braces minus how much the insurance paid for) it might be around $500.

Yes, you are correct. It costs around 5000. But it also depends on what kind of insurance that you use. Some insurance cover braces and some don't. Maybe your friend has an insurance with 500 deductible. That's why she only pays 500.
