Post root canal pain...HELP!!!!!?!

Question: Had a root canal done on my upper left bicuspid tooth on WED dec 12/07. Went back to the dentist the next day due to severe pain could not close my mouth when the teeth touched it caused increase pain. The dentist shaved down the bite. That relieved some of the pain. I am worried though cause i am still in lots of pain taking advil ES every 4 hours. Unable to eat on the left side of my mouth. Left check bone area is swollen. IN GENERAL JUST IN A LOT OF PAIN IN THE LEFT SIDE OF MY MOUTH. Is this normal or should i be worried. Will the pain ever go away. My first ever root canal so not sure what to expect. Any help would be greatly appericated. THANKS EVERYONE!!!!

pain is normal after a root canal, esp 24-48 hours after the procedure. reason being, when we do a root canal, we use chemicals to help kill the bacteria in your infected roots, and some of that can seep into the bone and tissue. as a result, you may experience pain/sensitivity due to the infiltration.

if the pain is bothering you, you should be taking about 800mg advil every 4-6 hours. you may also want to ask your dentist for a prescription med, such as vicodin, to help alleviate some of your discomfort
