I'm working out but gaining weight?!

Question: I'm working out but gaining weight?
I'm 16, female, & started working out about two months ago. I weighed around 132 lbs. I'm 5'5". Now, two months later, I weigh 138 lbs! I don't understand. I know muscle weighs more than fat, but this is totally discouraging. It feels like it's almost not worth it.
I work out 3-4 times a week. I use the elliptical, do lunges, run, do sit-ups, lift small arm weights, etc. I am a very healthy eater - I never eat chips or anything like that, the only drink I ever have is water because I don't like soda... what am I doing wrong? :[

You're looking at you physical weight, what I think you are concerned about is your mass (your size). To weight more than you did before you started working out is perfectly normal. You tend to eat more when you work out and your body is turning fat into dense muscle.

If you still are not convinced that this is the reason behind your weight gain then concentrate on a strict cardio workout for toning existing muscle and burning fat. After a couple of weeks of training you should notice a difference and you can then go back to developing the specific areas that you are keen to improve.

Many people eat more when they work out because it makes you more hungry. And as you say muscle, weighs more. So if your clothes are fitting well and you don't want to loose weight, keeping eating as you are. If you want to lose weight, you will have to eat less, even the right good quality foods, if you eat too much of them, you can gain weight. Try cutting each meal by 1/3 less than usual.

Like you said muscle weighs more than fat, if you are toning using light weights you will turn excess fat into muscle. As long as your diet is healthy and you do at least 30 Min's cardio 3 times a week you will start to loose weight. Look in the mirror and ask yourself if you look better rather than looking at the scales.

What time of day did you weigh yourself? Was this at the SAME time of day both times?

Also muscle weighs more than fat. I know that's what everyone says but it really is the truth. 5 pounds of muscle is significantly smaller than 5 pounds of fat.

Also at your height and weight, you really are at a healthy weight.

If your finding you are getting stronger it may be muscle. Also you may be growing more. Even if very little. Exercise can do that for young people. Also if you cut back on a food group the lack of it may cause problems. Talk to your doctor.
I had a friend in highschool who started crew(rowing) and gained 14 pounds in muscle by the end of the season.

Medical Experience.

u r trying way to hard to lose weight that u r gaining muscles and that is y u r gaining weight, plus if u r trying to lose weight try to eat less, eat every meal, but eat it only in little portions that will help u lose weight fast, and eat healthy snacks, and try to eat at the same time everyday if possible,

You're gaining muscle. Weight on the scale isn't really an accurate way of tracking your progress, a better way would be to either measure the inches you're losing or have your body fat percentage measured.

please understand this is a healthy way to loose weight and inexpensive

Your problem is either water weight or fat or measurement errors or some comdination of those three things. If there has been no significant change in your deit, it's probably water weight combined with errors in weighing. One thing is certain...it's not all muscle.

The most muscle you could have gained in two months would be on the order of ounces. And, you're not doing muscle building exercises anyway. You need to lift heavy weight with low reps and multiple sets to muscle failure to build muscle.

Also, few people weigh correctly....the same time everyday, upon rising in the morning after voiding the bladder but before taking anything by mouth, in the nude, using the same scale and taking three measurements and averaging the readings if they're different. Home scales are notoriously inaccurate and have poor repeatability which means you can get different reading with each measurement within a pound or two.

If you're trying to burn fat by exercising you're approach is all wrong. You should lose fat with diet control and plan your exercises around fitness goals such as excellence in a sport or occupation, strength, endurance, flexibility, systemic fitness, general health and well being, body sculpting, body awareness, coordination, poise and comportment, balance, body composition, mental acuity, educational experience, etc. Check out these fitness facts and I think you'll understand.

? If you consume fewer calories than you burn, you have to lose fat eventually. There are no exceptions to this fact.

? There are only two nonsurgical things you can do to sculpt your body and they are (1) add or lose fat and (2) add or lose muscle. Muscle can only be lost naturally through atrophy.

? A pound of fat will yield about 3500 calories (Kcal) of energy.

? An average person must run or walk about 5 miles (8 km) every day to burn one pound of fat per week BUT THEIR DIET MUST ALLOW IT.

? An average person must run or walk about 350 miles (563 km) to burn 10 pounds BUT THEIR DIET MUST ALLOW IT. If they walk 350 miles (13.4 marathons) at 3mph it will take them 117 hours or about three full 40 hour work weeks to burn 10 pounds of fat.

? If an average person consumes 500 calories per day less than they burn, they will lose about a pound a week with no extra time or physical effort required.

?Running does not burn any more fat than walking as long as the distance remains the same.

? It does not matter if a person runs or walks a given distance…they will burn the same number of calories. Calories are energy and energy expenditure is not time dependent. How fast a person runs has nothing to do with how many calories they burn. Only the distance determines the calories burned.

? There is no exercise which will remove fat from a particular place on the body. Your body (genetics) determines where you lose fat, not you nor your diet nor your exercise. Spot fat removal by diet or exercise is a myth which is why people spend so much money on liposuction.

? It is not necessary to do "cardio" to burn fat. Cardio is aerobic exercise while maintaining a heart rate of 80% of max or more which is used to maintain cardio-vascular fitness. You can burn fat in your sleep.

? Most of the calories you consume will be spent just keeping your body temperature at 98.6F.

? It doesn’t matter how hard or how long you exercise, you will not lose any fat if you eat too much. You can always eat more calories than you can burn. When it comes to burning fat, diet always trumps exercise.

? There are no supplements which will make your body burn fat. Only you can do that with diet control.

? An average natural bodybuilder who is just starting to train may gain as much as 4-8 ounces of muscle in a month. An average dieter who is burning fat will lose about a pound a week. Anyone can gain a pound in a few minutes just be drinking a pint of water.

If you want to lose fat, here's how.

Eat a diet of varied, wholesome, and high quality foods such that your daily caloric intake is about 500 calories less than your daily caloric burn while keeping your macronutrient ratios at about 55/25/20 (%calories from carbs/fats/protein) while not doing anything to defeat the foregoing plan such as taking supplements, abusing drugs, using cleanses or emetics, etc. That's it. It's that simple.

Here's the only two websites you need to do that.
