Question:

I went to the movies today and had some popcorn..?

Me and my friend shared the Fred and Ginger
which is a large popcorn
and two large sodas.
I got a diet dr. pepper and didn't drink much of it..
But I did eat like half of the bucket of popcorn..

How many calories was in that? A lot?

Answers:

Did you guys get margarine/butter added onto the popcorn?

Usually, because popcorn is airpopped (not deep fried, etc.), it is considered a better snack than chips or hot dogs because there are no extra oils (save for whats naturally in the popcorn itself). It also contains more "air space", so when you ingest it, you will also gulp/swallow air helping you to feel fuller on less.

Regular popcorn usually hangs around 400 kcal per 100 g serving (remember, 1 cup of popped popcorn = 8 g). I'm sure you can eyeball how many cups it takes to fill up a large bucket. Let's assume you ate 10 cups worth:

10 cups popcorn X 8 g = 80g popcorn

Since there are about 400kcal per 100g popcorn:

400kcal / 100g = 4kcal per 1 g of popcorn

Thus, 80g of popcorn = 320kcal

You probably comsumed about 320 kcal (of very little fat) or maybe more (but not a whole lot more). Now, if you added butter/margarine...you just tacked on an extra 1400 kcals about. That's almost 1/2 of your recommended daily caloric intake. And the majority of the calories are coming from fat! Not so good.

Next movie outing --> go for plain popcorn with some spicy seasoning and a bottle of flavoured water. The spicy-ness will slow you down and the flavoured water will quench your thirst for something a little sweet.

Happy eating!
