Does it make me less of a self-reliant person to go on a diet?!

Question:

Does it make me less of a self-reliant person to go on a diet?

Okay, here's the deal. I'm an overweight teen, & I know I need to lose weight before I develop more serious problems than obesity. The thing is, I kinda want to do it myself with healthy eating & exercise & all, rather than go on a diet. I have been on one program before, Weight Watchers, & I lost 20 pounds in about 2 months, so I know it works. I was happy about it at the time, but my perspective has changed.

I'm kinda embarassed to go on a diet, even though I know I need to. I know I have a problem, & I want to help myself correct it by any means possible, but my psych balks at going on a diet. It's not like I care if anyone knows, as long as the diet works. What's my problem? I guess just knowing that I can't take care of my problem by myself bothers me. Do you think it's really that big of a deal?

Most of all, *should* I go on this diet if it gives me this much mental trouble? I really want to lose weight, and a diet is a legitimate way to do so.

So...what do you think?

Answers:

If you need to there is nothing wrong with going on a diet. It doesn't change your personality or your independence. Sometimess we form bad food habits and need to retrain ourselves. But everyone does things like that; teaching yourself not to isn't bad.
And help isn't either, it is just like learning something from a teacher. That doesn't make you less independent does it?
Talk to your doctor before you diet though
