Why does my back hurt instead of my stomach while doing sit ups??!

Question: Why does my back hurt instead of my stomach while doing sit ups!?!?
Answers:
It is probably because you are doing it on a hard surface!. I had that same problem and so I bought a yoga mat and did my sit-ups and crunches on that!. Also, when I first began doing sit-ups and other excersices like those, my back hurt also, and so I asked someone at my gym!. The guy at the gym said it is just the constant "up and down" movement!. But if the pain continues to hurt, you might want to tell your doctor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Because you aren't doing them right!. You should always make sure your back is flat on the floor - slip your hand under the small of your back when lying down to make sure there is no space there!. Then you should hold your tummy tight - as though you were trying to stop yourself going to the toilet!. then you should find a spot on the ceiling and lift your head towards that making sure you are not craning your neck up!. Your stomach should be doing the work and not your back!. If you are still in doubt, ask a personal trainer in the gym to watch you do a sit up and advise!.

You may also want to try doing crunches from a fit ball which will help to support your back and make it even easier!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Crunches is a very general exercise and general exercises get general results!. Excessive floor crunches shorten the abdominal wall, pull your head forward and emphasize poor posture!.

Doing sit-ups is one way to strengthen your back muscles!. People who haven't done sit-ups in a while usually experience soreness in their lower back!. That's normal!. You can use ice and take ibuprofen for your back, and take it easy on the sit-ups for a couple of days until your back returns to normal!. BE CAREFUL -- you can really injure your back if you keep doing sit-ups without letting your back heal!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sit ups aren't the best way to go!. Crunches are better and you can do them supporting your lower back on a fit ball!. Here are some exercises: http://www!.medicinenet!.com/script/main/a!.!.!. and fitball ab exercises: http://outside!.away!.com/outside/bodywork!.!.!.

When you do ab exercises make sure you contract your stomach muscles, this will help support your back!. And do crunches on an exercise mat or padded surface!.

Your lower back and abs form part of your "core" muscles which help stabilise your body!. When you work any muscle, you should also work out the opposite muscle!. So if you do bicep curls you should work out the triceps as well!. Same for abs and lower back!. because you are getting the strength or force from your back to lift your body, when doing sit ups or any abs exercise, you should get the force from your abs/tummy!. This is the main "idea" to get a flatten tummy, to work out the muscles in the abs area!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It may be the hard surface you are excercsing on or perhaps you are causing strain on your back, I suggest using one of those ab chairs or (cheaper) use a ball, place it behind your bum and do sit ups that way, it will help alleviate the stress on your back!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
