Should I exercise if I'm sore?!
Question: I just started running yesterday. My calves are sore today. Should I work them out if they're sore or should I focus on my upper body until the soreness goes away?

Since you know why you are sore (just started running yesterday) you should exercise today and tomorrow ...
Make sure you properly stretch before running and push past the soreness.
DO NOT push past pain. If you feel a sharp pain stop immediately.
If you rest today and run tomorrow you will probably be sore tomorrow and won't ever get anywhere. After 3 days the soreness should go away.
I would do a light stretch, but not overtax them. Work on you upper body today and go back to running tomorrow. Keep stretching.
Soreness comes from latic acid build up - if you do high reps with low weight should help to some degree
if you feel sore, rest for a day or two, your muscles need to recover from the activity you did
If you are really sore, means you over did it. Rest the lower body for a day or two (do other excercies) and continue running when the soreness sunsides.
Remember to always warmup, stretch and cool down.

soreness yes...pain no..Pain means you have done something wrong
Be sure to stretch before AND after you run! If your legs are still sore fill up some cold water in the bath tub, put as much ice as you can in it, and soak your legs. Another thing that might help, rub icy hot on your legs before you run. (available pretty much at any grocery store)
no and ice it!
Focus on your upper body for a day or so but get back to running. Actually, walking is much better for you than running. It's gonna hurt your knees when you get older.
