What is a Belt Lap weight lose procedure, if that is what it's called???!

Question: I think it's called a belt lap and it's a procedure you get done as an out patient and it makes something smaller so you feel full and then you lose weight. I know it needs approved by a dr like if your being overweight is hindering you walking or giving you more health problems. What is the risk factor and does it work?? I'm desperate and my weight is hurting me in many different ways so am willing to shoot for something like this if able to. My dr is not very complying to things like this so don't know if she'll go for it or not. Need advice please.

If you are talking about Lap Band it is what the above said. A band is placed around your stomach and tightened to make it smaller therefore controlling the amount of food you eat. Sounds great huh?

Consider this. 1 out 3 people with Lap Bands have malnutrition because of the lack of nutrients since they cannot eat anything more then 1-3 bites at a time. (I'm talking 1-3 bites in a 6 hour period or longer).

Also many people have no discipline so they eat junk instead of healthy food so they end up getting very ill from malnutrition and even death.

I know of two ladies who are down to only drinking protein shakes (a half a cup) before throwing up because they cannot hold anything down.

The other thing is that lap band surgeries are very dangerous and no reason to do them without necessity. 40-60% end up having complications later on with 1 out of 2,000 dying on the actual operating table (these are bad odds for medicine).

You need to learn what to eat and what not to eat. Lap Band is a last ditch effort and in my opinion (I have dealt with many Bariatric Patients) is a terrible choice.

Do some research before even considering it. Make sure it is a reliable source and not a Lap Band site since they are bias.

WebMD has a huge article on Lap Banding with 1 benefit and over 12 considerable disadvantages to the procedure.

Are you talking about lap banding? Where they basically put a rubber band around your stomach and make it smaller so you can't eat as much

You're referring to a lap band.

It's outpatient surgery -- and it's reversible -- but it's a huge committment.

Almost no insurance pays for it -- it ranges between $15,000 and $18,000.

You do need to see someone who specializes in lap band surgery. Your doctor does not have to reccommend you (unless you're one of the very rare people whose insurance covers it).

If you have it done, the band will be circled around the top portion of your stomach. You won't be able to eat more than an ounce of food or so at a time. You won't be able to eat some foods ever again because they won't pass thru the opening of the band. Foods like bread and rice swell and get gummy. They won't go through.

Success, like anything else, depends on the patient. Some people lose hundreds of pounds. Some people lose a few dozen.

Nowhere have I been able to find reliable information about long term success.

You are talking about the Lap Band. It is a device (an adjustable band) that is inserted with a laproscope (so there is a small incision.

It goes around the upper part of the stomach to create a smaller stomach pouch while allowing the lower stomach to stay intact. It is adjustable to reduce the amount of food you need to eat to feel full.

It is surgery, so there are risks. See the source links. And lmerrittaz's answer is great since it gives good info too.
