When staring a diet and excercising program, is it normal to gain weight at firs!

Question: I have been on a diet and workout program for a week. I workout doing cardio on the treadmill, bike, and eliptical for an hour a day and I take in 1700 calories. I am what is considered to be morbidly obese. I feel better now that I am working out but I have gained 5 pounds. Is this normal? I know it can't be what I am eating because I am used to eating 3000 calories a day, so I have drastically reduced my calorie intake. Just want to make sure it is normal and if not what SHOULD I be doing.

no, usually you will lose a lot of weight in the beginning (water weight), but I guess every body is different. You may be gaining muscle causing an increase in weight.

u might b cutting 2 many calories right away. try going 4 an even 2000 and once u begin 2 lose some weight u can try and cut down 2 like 1800. i wouldnt go much lower than 1800. i have also heard about people that have gained weight when they 1st started exercising...im not quite sure y it happens but they eventually do start 2 lose it. just keep up the hard work

Are you drinking water? How hard are you working on the machines? Perhaps you can introduce some strength training exercises. You need to do cardio plus build up your muscle to shed fat. Not to be discouraging, but some people don't see results until 4-6 weeks into their journey. Keep it up tho. You'll feel better and better everyday. : ) I know, i've shed over 80 pounds already
