Lifting weights to burn fat?!

Question: Should you do high reps and low weight? Or high weight and low reps? I JUST started lifting weights. I have about hundred pounds to lose. I want to get back into shape like I was BEFORE I got married to my asshole of an ex husband.

Also, since I haven't been working out is it ok if my muscles are sore or is that going to burn me out? I do upper body and abs one day, and then lower body and lower abs the next. Plus I do forty to sixty minutes on a treadmill. I do four days on and then I take a day off. Sometimes I throw in some yoga or pilates right before I go to bed because it relaxes me, kind of like a bubble bath or something. It usually takes me about two hours to work out. This is day six! Yippie!

I'm also eating lots of vegetables and fruits, more veggies than fruits...plus whole grains and lean meats and I have a protien shake after I work out. But yeah, high reps and low weight or what?

Congratulations! You are doing a wonderful thing for yourself. I'm sure you'll be smokin' hot in no time at all :)

My advice to you is to go lower weigth with higher reps. The key in doing high reps is to go until exhaustion. If you are getting to 30 and you're not exhausted yet then go up 5 lbs until you start to really feel it. It should start to hurt around 15. Lifting weights is a fantastic way to lose weight, boost your metabolism and reshapre your body so keep it up.

On the cardio, it's very important to keep up the cardio but make sure you aren't tiring yourse;f out too much before you do your weigh lifting. This will make you more vulnerable to injury.

Your diet sound very good. Make sure you are eating some high quality protien after your weight lifting. Your muscles need it.

Most importantly make sure you REST. DOn't wear yourself out trying to reach your goals too fast. Your body need recorvery time. Personally I LOVE being sore for a few days after working out, it let's me know that I'm making a difference. Just make sure you know when to give your body a break.

Keep it up!

I would say alter it between high reps and low weight and high weigh and low reps. The first is good for toning, the second for building muscle. You're female so you don't have to worry about getting buff. You shouldn't really work out if your muscles are sore they need to recover, plus I don't find that feels so good. You actually build muscle during the recovery days, as basically you are repairing the damage you've done to them by exercising them, does that make sense. Anyway sounds like you are doing everything right. Keep on going.

take it slow

it took you how long to gain 100 lbs.
it'll take long to lose 100 lbs

Remember to keep going andgoing. to you reach your goal.

Try a gym and if you have the $$$ hire a personal trainer.

Try doing the buddy system get a friend to work out with

If I were you I would go to a trainer even just for a few sessions and hav him show you which excercises will best target your fitness needs.

FYI- You generally don't burn fat by lifting weights, you build muscle. In order to burn fat, you will have to be doing some cardio, like the eliptical or swimming laps.

Lifting weights does not burn much fat. Lifting weights will build muscle that will burn more calories at rest. Gain an extra pound of muscle and you will burn 50 more calories throughout the day doing the same thing.

I would stick to medium rep work. Say 8 - 12 reps. And make sure that you are pushing yourself. If you just go though the motions, you body will adapt and not improve.
