What should I do for cardio I can't jog on a treadmill?!

Question: I've been using something I don't know the name of but I know I'm not ready for jogging I can only jog 1/2 a mile
I walk 1.5 miles 5 days a week and go on some sort of machine for 30 minutes 6 times a week
What should I do instead of jogging and why can't I jog/how can I fix it

ask yourself why you cant use a treadmill. how are your shoes are they comfortable? research your running style (ive watched several videos on youtube about correct running posture). also look into correct breathing. also in the first several months of running your bones aren't dense enough to take the continued strain of running. this is something that improves with time(like 2 months max with lots of running.

goodluck and i expect to see you winning a marathon in a month!

Use a stair climber. Its my favorite

It takes time to build up to running (jogging) when you haven't done it in a long time. If you really want to start running, start out running for 1 min then walking 4 for a half an hour. Then move up to 2 min running and 3 min walking, etc.

Runningworld.com had a "smart coach" to give you tons of tidbits about running.

If you belong to a gym use the elliptical. I burn double what I used to on the treadmill. If you want to send your heart rate shooting up just bend your knees slightly lowering your body while you do it...sounds easy, but it's not!

Or get some tapes. I've tried a ton through Netflix and Tae Bo gets your heart rate up there nicely with a pretty quick routine. Richard Simmons is actually really good too if you're not where you want to be yet.

Walking is great exercise. Don't worry about jogging..hard on your knees anyway. Just race walk as much as you can and slow down..then keep doing it.

If you don't have any problems (i.e. with your joints) and it is just a matter of being out of breath and sore then I would say just push your self. Try to go 10 mins at a jogging speed and then walking for 2 mins and try again.
You will get sweaty and out of breath but as long as you don't black out or get stabbing pains in your chest it will give you more stamina.
I also like rowing for cardio as it works your entire body. I used to do this at 5.5 mph for 10 mins now about 7 months later I can go 5.7 mph for 20 mins without stopping. I am sure that there are people out there who really push themselves and made much more progress than this, and the opposite. Also if you run one day work your upper body the next to give your muscles time to heal.
So believe that you can do it and be disciplined. Also be ready for failure and setbacks. You are not a failure just because you can't do something the first time or don't achieve 'normal' standards. Just aim to improve every time.
Don't forget to check with a doctor to make sure you are fit for intense physical activity and don't have any heart conditions

I have a hip injury that leaves me unable to do impact cardio (like running) so I'm in the same boat you are.

You can tear it up on any other cardio machine: bike, elliptical, arc trainer, stair climber, anything! The great thing about cardio machines is that they're user friendly. It takes little to no instruction to use one. Hop on and have at it!

Increase your walking to 1 to 2 miles a day and use stairs as much as possible. When you walk, walk fast too. Swimming is also great for cardio.. Increase your miles when it gets too easy, then do more. I'm 58 years old and now walk 5 miles a day about 3 times a week and 3 miles a day the rest of the time. I also bike ride everyday from springtime through fall.
