Are colonics really good for you?!

Question: I've been watching You Are What You Eat on the BBC America channel. The nutritionist on the show says it gets rid of toxic crap and makes you healthier. I'm afraid of doing one since I read what it involves, but am interested if it is truly beneficial.

Nope. It's a scam.
First of all, the rubbish (I almost said crap, bad pun) about there being 12 pounds of stuff stuck in your intestines is not true.
I've heard doctors talk about this. No such thing, it doesn't happen, it's false.
There's no "toxic buildup" or whatever, your body has it's natural process to get rid of waste.
An enema occasionally is not a bad thing, but you have to be aware, as the food passes through your intestines, different nutrients are absorbed at different places.
At the end of your colon, it gets mostly potassium, some B vitamins, and it gets the water out of the "sludge", which solidifies the stool.

So if you're blowing water up there, you're going to end up potassium deficient.
You should replace it, by eating bananas and/or grapes, if you're going to do any of this stuff.
But it's a load of crap. (oh, I couldn't resist...)

No. They can deplete your body of valuable electrolites and make you very sick.

I don't know but my friend swears by them. Treatments like this have been going on for ages in different forms so there might be something to it. I don't think it's harmful overall but you do need to alter the foods you eat and make sure you get appropriate vitamins in order for the cleanse to be most effective. If you continue to put garbage into your body, it's a waste of money to do the cleanse.
