You will burn fat if you walk briskly but the longer you walk the more fat you will burn. Start slowly and build up to a few miles every day.
I can't really tell you how many miles it would be, but I have heard from a few different sources (college classes and my mom) that your body starts to burn fat when you have been doing aerobic activity for 20 minutes. So if you exercise for half hour, then you are only burning fat for 10 minutes. As long as you are walking fast enough to get your heartbeat up, then it should apply the same to walking.
