Climbing 82 flights of stairs is an absolute killer. If you want to do that lung cancer event you'll need to train, and the Stairmaster is your best friend. A treadmill or an elliptical will help a little, but not much. For repetitive exercises like that, you need to simulate what you'll be doing as closely as possible. Remember, it's not just putting one foot in front of the other -- you're fighting gravity. Stairmaster, definitely.

It is pretty hard. At first it does not seem like that much, but as you go higher and higher it gets harder and harder. You do need training, and running on an elliptical and treadmill are not enough because they do not give you the experience of lifting your body up. The best way is just to run up and down your stairs for as long as you can.

Don't let anyone kid you, it is hard. If it's a race then yes, do some training. If it's for a good cause, then don't worry about the training. Some treadmill work on an incline could help prepare you aerobically. Be sure to pace yourself. A lot of people go crazy at the start and they're hyperventilating by the 3rd floor. Take controlled easy steps and watch your heart rate. Good luck!
