Flax seed / Linseed oil, anyone have a good way of taking it?!

Question: Does any one have any handy recipies? I have tried it mixed with cottage cheese, mixed with yogurt, and as a salad dressing, but the smell and texture really make me gag. I have never been able to stand any oil (bad experience with a pancake once) and I really really would like to include this in my diet. To take it in the capsule form would mean taking over 20 capsules in a day, and I cannot tolerate that either (previous gastric tumor surgery). I need 4 table spoons a day, but at the moment, cannot take even 1/4 of a teaspoon.

All ideas welcome!

We must go to the same GP, because my GP has recommended the same amount for me as well (I am guessing that you are voluptuous?).

The capsules are no where near enough, they don't even reach a therapeutic level, you would need to take 60 tablets! Now this is not for 'normal' people, this is for people who have significant health problems such as you describe. Don't worry about the laxative effect, because it is a bulking agent, not a stimulant. As for how to take it so it is palatable? good question, I mix it in with mashed sweet potatoes, or other vegetables after they are cooked and cooled down a bit.

Good luck, hope that it will help with all your problems.

I take it orally in pill form...That way you can swallow 20 pills a day if you absolutely need to..... divided up in several doses.......because 4 tablespoons a day is hard for you try mixing it in a SHAKE maybe?..just a thought!!!

Try mixing it into a fruit smoothie--I do it all the time. Also, you can mix it into a chocolate shake or protein powder. I don't recommend you start drinking coffee, but if you already do, it tastes pretty good in it and will make the experience more healthful. My favorite Flaxseed oil is Barlean's 100% organic, cold-pressed. It has a slightly nutty flavor, but isn't that bad really.

where i work we put it in smothies sometimes, im not sure about 4 tablespoons though. pluss that would be a pain to make smoothies daily

i usally bake using ground flaxseed. but i dont know if you could get enough into one muffin for what you need

(can you bake with the oil instead of veg. oil? i forget what oils can be baked with, if so, maybe make muffins with ground flaxseed and that oil?)

I mix it with alot of fruit and flaxseed oil and protien powder and ice and make a shake. mostly berries mixed fresh or frozen its not to bad. I drink two a day one for breakfast and one for dinner or lunch. You should also try ground flaxseed instead of the reqular flaxseed.

Why do you want to take 4 tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily? That would be about 500 calories and nearly 60 grams of fat; that is the recommended amount of fat for an entire day and about a third of your daily calories! That much flaxseed oil could not be part of a healthy diet: you would have to eat no other foods with fat. Did your doctor recommend that much flaxseed oil?

Some people recommend eating about 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed daily. Two capsules of flaxseed oil provides the same amount of omega 3 fatty acids as 1 tablespoon of ground seed. I think you need 2 capsules, not 20, daily.

See the link below for info about flaxseed.

No offence but 4 tablespoons of flaxseed is over doing it not only can flaxseed cause a laxative effect on the body it is also extremely high in fat I know you mentioned that it was suggested to help you but im sure you must be consuming foods through out the day which would contain omega fatty acids 3, 6 and 9 Maybe just try one tablespoon per day and see how you go
