Question: What causes a startle reaction when there is no external stimulus?
Answers:
They're subtle mental synapses that do not coincide with the body, sort of like a short circuit. And just like a short circuit, there's a reason for it, but no one knows. I don't think it's anything to worry about. However, when falling asleep and this happens, the involuntary twitching, I think this is when your body is shutting off to use your mind mostly so you can dream. It's like when you power off your computer and it goes into "sleep" mode. So do we. We sleep and we dream and through dreaming we reboot and make room for memory, like a computer. Fascinating.
