Question: Why dont we remove the appendix at a particular age before the infection?
Answers:
I don't know but my husband thinks you should be able to have your appendix and gall bladder removed at the same time if you need one out, because if one goes, they probably both will.
Because it cost a lot of money to have an appendectomy (appendix removed). Who's going to pay for it, the insurance sure isn't unless it needs to be. And more importantly 98% of people will make it through life with no appendicitis, so it is pointless to make these people undergo the common risks of a surgury to remove an organ that more than likely will be fine anyways (ANY surgery has major risks of serious infection). To the person who said something about the gallbladder and appendix. That is false, there is no correlation between having a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) and appendectomy. The two are unrelated.

It is a myth that the appendix has no function. The appendix is believed to be a source of lymphoid stem cells that populate the intestinal lining, as well as a site for the maturation and differentiation of lymphocytes, particularly antibody producing B cells.
