Has anyone ever heard of an infected salivory gland?!

Question:

Has anyone ever heard of an infected salivory gland?

My grandson, aged 2, woke up with swelling around his jaw and neck. It wasn't bruised, just swollen. We took him to the Emergency Room at the local hospital. They said it was an infected salivory gland, and gave him amoxycillin. It doesn't seem to bother him, but I can't find anyone who has ever heard of this before. If you have heard of it, is there anything else we can do for him?

Answers:

Yes, I would recommend you take him to his primary physician/pediatrician. In adults, infected salivary glands can become a much larger more serious issue. For children, the risk may perhaps be milder but I would take every precaution to get proper follow-up for your grandson. Just a word of advice, local hospital emergency rooms are not known for their thorough evaluations.
