Pediatrician asked if I ever had?!

Question:

Pediatrician asked if I ever had?

My 2 month old has a swollen red top lip. Babies usually get blisters from sucking the bottle, but this looks like it is something different. Her pediatrician asked if i ever had herpes? No I havent, and have no signs of it. Pregnant woman get tested for stds and aids while pregnant, wouldn't it show up if I did infact have herpes? I asked this question under newborns and didnt get an answer, so I figured someone might help here.

The doctor didn't say it was herpes, she just asked if I ever had it. I had my doctor test me for every STD there was because I learned the father cheated with someone who had a disease. Everything came back negative. So I was just wondering if a test for herpes would be included in the testing. I just hope whatever it is, is not a disease or anything harmful.

Answers:

She is asking you if you have ever had oral herpes (cold sores) on your mouth, she obviously thinks your baby has a cold sore on its lip.

80% of people have oral herpes (cold sores) and it isn't classed as an std. Even if you have never had symptoms of cold sores yourself, they are caused by a virus and you could still be a carrier. If it is oral herpes, don't worry, your baby will have just got it by being kissed by someone that has the virus. Most people catch oral herpes as children, by adulthood 80% will have it, it isn't an std and it isn't a big deal, so it isn't worth worrying about. Hope this helps.

To add: no, normally they wouldn't test for herpes. And if you did have genital herpes it wouldn't be causing your baby to have oral herpes.
