Question: My hubby is a type 1 diabetic and only eats once a day, he seems to think this is ok, is he wrong!?
my husband is newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic and only eats once a day, and generally only has his insulin (novorapid) with that one meal!. I think he should be eating more through out the day so that he can have his required breakfast, lunch and dinner insulin doses!. his sugar levels seem to be fine but im worried if he keeps skipping meals it could only make things worse!. He is the only diabetic i know and im just looking for some advice, thanks!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This will cause complications if continued over a long period of time!. Diabetes needs to be monitored closely and on average should have something to eat every three hours!. He should be eating more meals, I don't eat breakfast but still take insulin to cover myself being high!. His body is probably still producing a small portion of insulin and soon he will require more insulin!.
He really should talk to a dietitian and endocrinologist to find out what he needs to do!.
But all diabetics need to watch what they eat and should eat regularly to stop any complications later in life!.
I take 4 injections a day and I have been doing so for 12 years!. I watch how many carbs I put in as to how much insulin I take, but even if I don't eat, I still have to give myself some insulin to cover my body going into hyperglycemia!.
I hope this helps!.

This question is best answered by your husband's endocrinologist and dietician!.

You said that his blood glucose levels seem to be fine even though he is skipping meals and insulin doses!. This could mean that he is in the "honeymoon phase" where a recently diagnosed type 1 diabetic can still produce small amounts of insulin and therefore requires less insulin injections!.

It is more desirable to be eating small meals throughout the day rather than just one main meal all day, as others have already mentioned!.

Encourage him to see the doctor/diabetes team as they can advise him on what to do if he doesn't feel like eating at specific times of the day!. His insulin doses/regime can be changed to suit his lifestyle rather than him changing to suit his diabetes!.

Good luck!. :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Newly diagnosed diabetics are supposed to attend a class about managing their disease which talks about: diet, exercise, and medications!. If he has not attended this class then it is absolutely essential that he do so!. He should be eating SIX small meals a day not ONE!. You might want to attend the class with him to help him with his diet!. PLEASE, call his doctor immediately and ask about such a class!. There is probably one at the local hospital or medical center!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't have type 1 but it's generally a better idea to eat more often and smaller portions!. You will find lots of very useful information at the "newly diagnosed type 1" section of the American Diabetes Association, see the "source" link below!.

diabetics should eat smaller meals more times a day!. if his body goes too long without eating, it will take energy(sugar) that has been stored in his liver and his skeletal muscle!. this can cause his blood sugar to sky rocket and be higher than if he hadn't eaten at all!. very dangerous!. Diabetes aside, you can't ingest the necessary nutrition in one meal a day! This is absolutely not ok, and will do him serious damage in the long run!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
