Not at all!. Atrial fibrillation (a-fib) is a heart rhythm abnormality that occurs when the top 2 chambers (atria) quiver or fibrillate, and the bottom chambers beat out of sync, causing the heart to beat fast and erratically!. This is not a lethal rhythm problem, but can be bothersome!. Since the atria do not contract fully, the patient loses about 20% of their cardiac output and it can make them feel tired and short of breath!. Other patients don't even know they are in a-fib!. People can live a long, long, long time with this arrhythmia!. There are a lot of different treatments for a-fib, and sometimes people just remain in permanent a-fib and do just fine!. The main risk for a-fib is that is can lead to strokes!. When a person is in this rhythm, little clots can form up in the top chambers (because they aren't contracting fully) and break loose and cause a stroke!. Because of this potential risk, the patient is usually place on a potent blood thinner called Coumadin/Warfarin!. This reduces the risk of stroke associated with a-fib!.
