It is not uncommon to have a doctor not take the time to explain to the parent what he thinks is wrong with your child!. Gastroenteritis is another name for "a stomach bug"!. These past few weeks I have seen too many!. The most common infections type or cause is viral (usually Rotavirus) and other 24-72 hour viral illnesses!. The crucial thing to remember in you child is that, it will run it course, so NO PHENERGAN, NO IMODIUM, just fluids like pedialyte (slowly), AND give and extra 3-4 OZ per each large loose stool your child has!. So, in gastroenteritis the most important thing is not to allow your child get dihydrated!. One advice I give to parents is: if your child is listless, doesn't ewwant to play much, won't drin, BUT recognizes mom, and at times looks good, and is urinating, I tell parents to take the next 4 hours to rehydrate him with pedialyte!. How much to give him!? easy: divide his weight by 2 and then multiply by 50!. this is the amount of fluid in cc (so dive by 30 to get the number of ounces, then!.!.you take the total number of onces and divided into 4 hours!. It should not be more than 6-8 oz tops!. Once you deliver that volume (with a dropper, do not expet your child to take it on he own, they are smart) then your child MUST, and I mean MUST perk up!!!. If not, then the dehydration is too profound and needs hospitalization!. Before you give the oral rehydration treatment, check his belly, obser the skin, ee if the skin look like a bread dough, kind of wrinkled!. If this is the case, take him back to the ER and tell the doctor that your child has Hypertonic dehydration, and the treatment is different and slow, and needs hospital stay!. This might not be the case :) I hope this helped!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach and small and large intestines!. You can get vomiting or diarrhea!.

Make sure you are giving your child plenty of fluids!. Non carbonated!. And stay away from drinks that have alot of sugar!. Since your child is so little plenty of fluids are very important so they don't get dehydrated!. If they have diarrhea they need to replace the fluid they are loosing!.

Alot of times this is mistaken for the flu!. However, gastroenteritis can be caused by eating something your body just didn't agree with!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Basically, it's an upset stomach that's similar to the stomach flu (but it's not the flu)!. It's usually an irritation or inflammation within the stomach!.
Your child could have gotten it from somebody else, or it could have been caused by food poisoning!.
