Has anybody had a bypass on the legs?!
Question: Has anybody had a bypass on the legs!?
I'm scheduled for a bypass on right leg, as the artery is blocked!. Does anybody know what to expect afterward!?Www@Answer-Health@Com
Answers:
Yes, I have had bypass of the left femoral artery times 3!.
Several factors go into the reason for needing artery bypass such as intermittent claudication!.
Angioplasty is the best option available due the much lower risk of complications related to anesthesia and the surgery itself!.
Angioplasty has many limitations and may not work for you!.
Angioplasty didn't work for me when they tried it!.
Sometimes things get really complicated and requires actual surgery!.
When they perform bypass, there is essentially two types!.
One using your own vein to bypass the artery or using a synthetic "graft" material!.
Either or work well for most!.
When you are waking, your breathing tube and Foley catheter should no longer be placed, in most cases!.
You may get sick after surgery and that is a completely normal reaction to anesthesia!. Medicines can be given to reduce the risk of nausea to occur!.
You will spend up to 4 hours usually in the recovery area and then will be transferred to an outpatient unit, which some people are released as early as 1 day afterwards
If you have heart problems, make sure both the surgeon and the anesthesiologist are aware of those problems as having heart problems increases the risk of complications of vascular surgery!.
Best of luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Depending on the patient & the exact procedure, we usually expect patients to stay 3 -5 days after surgery!.
If possible, we get the patient up & moving the first day (with the help of narcotics)!. On the second or third day, we test the circulation to see how it improved!.
The main determinants of the length of stay is patient health, degree of pain control, and how quickly he/she mobilizes!.
Expect some swelling in the operative leg!. Unless you're told otherwise, keep it elevated when you get home!.
