Scalp Psoriasis.?!

Question: I'm sure there are so many topics relating to psoriasis, but I can't find any.

I've had psoriasis for a couple years now, what started as a half dollar size spot on my leg, which was thought to be ringworm at first, is now all over my body.

The spots all over my body are not bad at all, but i can't get them under control because the cycle just continues once I get them to go away..

My main concern is my scalp. Whenever I shower, I make sure I have my fine comb, and I rake out all of the skin and the scales, but of course, that causes it to be raw and bleed, and once it hits the water, burn like crazy. I've used endless amounts of cream, and Ultravate works the best, but not enough.

I can't get my scalp under control and it's absolutely terrible. It's always flaking and always bright red. I bleach my hair just to burn it for a month or so, so it doesnt grow back

Is there anything I can do to keep it under control without having to shave my head and go through intensive treatment?

Have you been properly diagnosed with psoriasis?

If you have, does it flare up acutely? Or is this a chronic condition that you're dealing with?

Generally, with the scalp area, your condition is called "seborrheic dermatitis," which is caused by inflammation of your sebaceous glands and accelerated skin proliferation (sometimes it could also occur due to an yeast-like fungus)...which is why I asked if you were properly diagnosed because there are different treatments depending on the cause.

Instead of bleaching and raking, which may cause your scalp skin to be even more vulnerable to other infections/inflammation problems, I recommend that you try Head&Shoulders shampoo (for dandruff). Avoid using this on broken skin!!!!! This means you should stop hurting your scalp, wait for the skin to heal, and try the shampoo. There are different concentrations of the active ingredient - pyrithione zinc. If you purchase the lower concentration (0.1-0.25%), leave the shampoo in for a few minutes before you rinse off. If you use the higher concentration up to 2%, you should rince off within minutes of application.

Another product is Selsun Blue. It contains selenium sulfide. You also want to avoid using this product on broken skin. This product may stain lighter hair colors, so if your hair color is light, make sure to rinse off properly.

If you decide to try either of the two products (stick to one), you want to use them at least 2-3 times a week, and it may take up to 4-6 weeks before you see any improvements. However, if your symptoms seem to not go away or get worse, stop the product immediately and go see a doctor!

Besides the products, you want to maintain good hygiene, and you can always use shampoo that you regularly use to cover up any odor from the medicated shampoo (meaning you can shampoo twice).

There is antifungal treatment option, but you should really talk to a doctor and determine the cause before you consider products other than the two I listed.

When in doubt, ask your doctor for any further advice. I hope you get better soon!

Hello there. I strongly recommend that you use herbal Cream and Spray for psoriasis by Champori: it works better than anything else on my plaque psor: first spray on the scalp and work it briefly with your fingertips, then apply the cream; Leave it overnight, or repeat 2-3 times a day. My scalp cleared in just few weeks and I haven't had a flare up for more than a year now.
Best,
Bernadette
