If carbs makes a diabetic's blood sugar go up?!

Question: What is wrong with following an Atkins-type diet? I know they recoment 45 carbs per meal and 15 per snack (and I'm munching on my morning 1/2 pop-tart at the moment and ate a carb-less breakfast.)

A lot of people who do the Atkins diet start having cholesterol/heart problems due to only eating meat (most people dont eat fruits, etc with this diet because the sugars count as carbs). Diabetics are prone to have high cholesterol as it is, so an all meat diet isn't smart, also, carbs is what keeps your blood sugar up, if you cut carbs out of your diet completely, you will walk around with low blood sugar. Good sugar!

If it's done as Dr. Atkins intended, it can be fine. He recommended lots of berries, lean meats, and whole grains. The problem is that people take "low carb" to also mean refined sugars, bacon and fatty meats, and other junk food (like Pop Tarts, sorry) to be OK to eat. This is where we are finding health risks with low carb eating. But if you do the healthy version, as long as your energy is good, you can do well with it.

More protein is fine, but too much can cause kidney problems. Instead of fruits eat more vegetables. They are very nutritious, and don't have the same insulin affect as fruits.
