Bone Marrow Transplant...?!
Question: My cousin needs a bone marrow transplant, is there a chance I'll be asked to test and see if I'm a match? I don't know all of the rules and things like that, like who can be a match, etc. And, what does donating bone marrow entail? Is it painful for either person involved? Thanks.

Yes, you could be asked to be tested. It is possible for any blood relative, as well as for strangers, to be a match, but she has the best shot with a blood relative. The best possible match is a sibling, and I'm assuming if your cousin has any, they will already have been tested... The procedure can be painful for both parties, but isn't that worth saving a life? Yes any one can be asked. and yes you can match. you need to have close tissue and blood type. donating marrow is when a doctor sticks a VERY large needle into your hip bone and the needle goes inthrough the bone to the center. once it is in the doctor will take as much marrow needed and then remove the needle. you are under general anethesia but are awake and it hurts like he!! still. but it is worth it to save a persons life and you have to get a alot of shots to make sure you are healthy plus you can never have had cancer because you marrow is bad. and the person receiveing the marrow has to have their immune system completely killed off so it wont eject ur marrow so the person may die from a asimplle cold and is put in a sterilized room with the vistors having to come in in full body suits. p[lus your marrow still maybe rejected. it is a lot of risk but it works!
