In leukemia, as a consequence of the bone marrow being "controlled" by cancer cells, there is decreased production of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, resulting in anemia, increased susceptibility to infections, and increased risk of bleeding. Any of these 3 may have life-threatening consequences.

I'm very sorry to hear about your friend. If she doesn't have enough "working" blood cells, ultimately her heart and other vital organs won't get enough oxygen, and that could kill her. Also, if she does not have sufficient working white cells, she may be unable to fight off infection.

My best wishes to you both.

With her blood cell ***** dropping so low, her immune system has become very weak. Without it, she can't fight off bacteria and she's prone to many different infections.

Sorry. I hope she makes it through! :[

The fainting suggest that her red blood cell ***** was very low. She was severely anemic, not uncommon with leukemia. However, if she was under treatment, I'd be surprised that her doctor would let her get that anemic. Usually she would have been transfused. Maybe she had an acute bleeding episode.

I doubt that the pessimistic prognosis had much to do with her anemia or blood loss, unless measures to correct it were not working. Probably based more on her general debilitation due to the leukemia.
