Answers: My blood pressure is 143/76...is this considered high?
Rustoria is correct in pointing out that BP does vary throughout the day, depending on activity and emotional state.
By definition, hypertension is a blood pressure which is over 140 systolic (top #) or 90 diastolic (bottom #) for at least 3 consecutive visits. This is ideally done in a sitting position at REST.
One BP reading of 143/76 (which would not particularly raise alarms anyway) is meaningless. If there is a continuous trend, where your BP is >140/90 at rest, then there might be a cause for treatment.
Remember, BP is expected to go up when exercising or other strenuous activities. So immediately after exercise, it will probably be over 140/90 and this is a normal BP response (unless it is excessively high -see your doctor if, let's say it is >170/90 after exercise).
The ideal is 120/70, but 143/76 is considered to be in the normal range. 150 would be pushing it. Blood pressure varies throughout the day, depending on a lot of factors.
