MRSA queries for those in healthcare?!

Question: My mother yesterday visited in hospital an old friend and kissed her on the cheek as she left. She has since found out that this person has been diagnosed as having MRSA (gotten from her job in a nursing home). Now I know this is not necessarily the end of the world but my father is at home being cared for by my mother, she has just had an operation to remove a tumour from his bowle and is awaiting chemo. I myself am 7 months pregnant. what should she do?

I doubt she got MRSA from kissing her on the cheek. I work weekend doubles @ a nursing home which requires me to put some of the residents to bed and I kiss a lot of them on the cheek when I put them to bed, I know at least 2 of them have MRSA and I kiss them every time I put them to bed, I have never got the MRSA. I would not worry about it. Now your fathers immune system is going to be susceptible to disease so I would recommend that your mother stay away from anyone with infectious diseases for quite a while if she is going to be caring for him.

Most people in the population carry MRSA on their skin normally, the only problem occurs when it enters the blood stream where it can potentially cause septicaemia and kill you.

Don't worry too much about it, the media over-hype MRSA, I know i'm a nurse. Just make sure the surgical wound stays clean

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria
