Is it true if you have diabetes you lose weight/bodymass?!

Question: It depends. Diabetes occurs either when your body does not make enough insulin (type 1) or develops a resistance to insulin (type 2). Most diabetics have type 2, which is strongly associated with obesity.

Insulin is a type of growth hormone. It works by stimulating peripheral tissues to bring in blood sugar. Once in the tissues, the sugar is converted into energy. However, if the energy is not all used, it gets stored as fat by the body. In fact, treatment of diabetes with insulin may stimulate weight gain.

If diabetes is not treated, blood sugar levels may rise dangerously. Symptoms of uncontrolled diabetes include excessive thirst, hunger, urination, dizziness, and more. Some patients find themselves eating and drinking more (and gain more weight). Others may lose weight as they urinate more and become dehydrated.

Paradoxically, despite high blood sugars, because insulin levels are insufficient for the level of blood sugar, the body senses that it is "starving." As a result, the body begins to break down fat stores to supply energy (ketosis). Over time, patients may lose some weight.

Intentionally allowing diabetes to be uncontrolled is NOT a good idea. If severe enough, uncontrolled diabetes may lead to complications including premature heart disease, kidney failure, coma, or death.

it depends, you may gain or loose weight...
it depends on if u have type 1 or type 2 diabetes

It depends on if you have type 1 or 2.

yes, but dont ever think abt that....

it depends on which diabetes you have type 1 you lose weight type 2 you gain weight uncontrollably and thats the one you have to watch out for losing a limb or two from.

depending on the type and how bad it is you can do either. Meaning you can lose weight or gain it. My mom gains weight unless she watches what she eats.

Its just the opposite. Most people with diabeties are over weight as a rule.

an answer you could easily google! now you're gonna get everyone answering the same thing. "it depends".

Sometimes if your blood sugar is high you may lose weight, however I don't see it very often in my patients. They usually stay the same with their weight.

It depends on if you have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. I mean, you could lose or gain weight, depending on the type that you have.

It depends on the type that you have and how far gone you are in the disease. My brother went from 200 to about 140 lbs but he had type 1 and when he found out it was out of control.

I lost 30 lbs in 1 month. Literally. My parents thought it was my mad skills in DDR. But only if you have type 1 do you lose it.

it depends on if it's being treated or not.
if it's not, most likely yes.
type 1 you lose weight.
type 2 you normally gain weight.
type 2 can also be controlled by just eating healthier.
type 1 will give you mood swings, lose weight, and drink more water.

It depends on what you eat and the meds you take to treat your diabetes, but if you lose weight most of the time with type 2 you can get rid of hte diabetes. I don't think the same is true for type 1.

If you have Type 2 Diabeties - Possibly.

Unexplained weight loss: People with diabetes are unable to process many of the calories in the foods they eat. Thus, they may lose weight even though they eat an apparently appropriate or even excessive amount of food. Losing sugar and water in the urine and the accompanying dehydration also contributes to weight loss.

Although there are also many other symptons and you should concider seeing you GP if you feel you may have Diabeties .... keep in mind that it is sometimes hereditory!

Muscle wasting is associated with aging and a serious consequence of different diseases, including cancer and diabetes. Researchers at Joslin Diabetes Center, with the assistance of other collaborating researchers, have discovered an important biochemical pathway for muscle wasting
