Simple answer blood leaks into the chest, no room for lungs to expand and fill with air. The patient suffocates. Blood flow to the brain is diminished from the leaking heart, causing brain damage or death. No blood flow to the kidneys, renal failure.

How is this a problem?!
The patient would bleed out very quickly or suffer a fatal arrhythmia.

i am not sure how familiar you are with the works of the human body but the heart is the central pump that circulates blood thru the body ie:; a very vital organ with out it functioning properly it is rare that life is sustain for any great length of time.

I work in an emergency room. If someone has a true stab wound to the heart than the prognosis is grave.....IE...he or she will likely die. If the knife or whatever object is impaling the heart is removed, the pt typically suffers from a major bleed out. In rare occassions....where the knife is left...a condition called "tamponade" is created. IF the patient can make it to the OR AND the OR staff are successful in removing the object and restoring bloodflow WITHOUT a balloon pump (a mechanical device that acts as an artifical pump to subsitute for the heart mechanism), then this person may have a small chance of survival....

Depends on a lot of factors like how deep, was the knife rusty and are they in poor health to begin with. Are they a bleeder!!

Good Luck!
